Painting Workshop by Denis Chasse

Denis' workshops are relaxed, entertaining and informative. They are built around the concept of instructing participants in composing a scene with vibrant color and design. The group will meet at a nearby outdoor setting both days at 9 a.m. We will begin with a brief lecture followed by a painting demonstration. The material covered in the lecture will be expanded upon during the demonstration. Other topics and techniques will be introduced; but, the focus of the day's work will remain on the material covered in the lecture. Questions and comments will be welcomed during the lecture and demo which will end around 10 a.m. Students will then begin their own paintings while Denis visits with each student to offer personalized instruction. This section of the workshop continues until noon at which time the group will break for a one-hour lunch. Students continue painting from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Denis will circulate among the students offering pointers on each student's work. A critique of the day's work will be held at dinner. This workshop is for beginners and intermediates in either oil or watercolor. Through demonstrations and working closely with each student, Denis will coach you through in developing your skills in painting. A list of materials will be sent to participants prior to the workshop.

If artist wish to participate in some of the Yoga offerings, Katheryn will be offering a "sun salutation session" from 7:45 a.m. unitl 8:45 a.m. on the grounds of the inn just prior to the painting demonstrations and a "relaxation yoga session" from 3:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

The painting workshops is $ 150 per artist with optional particpation in the yoga session each day for an additional $ 50.

A sense of "oneness" "Inn Yoga" workshop with Katheryn Chasse

Katheryn's passion for yoga is a lifetime joy! She is trained in classical yoga and has been practicing for 20 years. She recently completed a year-long course in becoming a certified instructor. She has been mentored by Lauren Tooling (Iyengar & Hatha) in Albany, has assisted a Judisth Lassiter teacher, worked with Ed Daily, who is the main assistant for Rodney Yee, a BKS Iyengar instructo, and has worked with Eileen Muir of Northampton, MA, a master teacher of yoga, also trained in India. It is this background that enables her to work effectively with each student in helping them to increase their own sense of "oneness" through yoga. Also, on a personal note, Katheryn has suffered stenosis in the past, but through yoga, has acquired the ability to releive and decrease the pain to such an extent that she does not need to see a physical therapist nor face surgery, as previously recommended.

The yoga day begins at 7:45 a.m. with a "sun salutation" session untill 8:45 a.m. "Surya Namaskar" or more commonly called "sun salutation" is a vinyasa flow of asanas or poses. They are exhilarating and enjoyable, developing alertness and stamina. Because bloss is diffused in the solar plexus, it stimulates the abdominal organs and gives energy. The second flow is a neck balance and forward bend sequence shere blood is supplied to the brain, giving it rest and sustained focus for your coming day.

The yoga day continues with and hour from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. of asanas for all with an emphasis on the variations for each student, so they will be able to maximize their yoga sessions at home or in a class. Many benefits come from the correct practice of yoga. The standing poses give vitality, the sitting poses are calming, twists are cleansing, supine poses are restful, prone poses are energizing, inverted poses develop mental strength, balancings bring a feeling of lightness, backbends are exhilarating and the junpings develop agility. Also, many common and/or chronic physical ailments can be improved by the practice of yoga postures. Yoga postures have the ability to work on specific parts of the body including spine, neck, joints, liver, kidneys, heart and respiratory organs. When the body is oxygenated and filled with healthy blood, decongested and rested, stamina, lung capacity, heart performance, muscle tone, circulation and respiration improve!

After lunch, the workshop conintues with a session of inspirational readings from 2:30 p.m. unitl 3:30 p.m. Katheryn will read from various yoga and other inspirational texts. Personal Journal Reflection of the day (bring a small journal.) time will be given for discussion and sharing.

Next is an hour of Relaxation and Restoration. Savasana I & II will be demonstrated. Variations will be given to students based on the book "Relax and Renew" by Judith Lassiter. "This book can help anyone develop and deepen the practice of yoga, and use it in the work of healing not only one's body, but one's life. The detailed recommendations for practicing the various postures are extremely valuable. Restorative yoga can be a getaway to deep relaxation and the cultivation of mindfulness. Enter, enter!"
