Yoga is one of those trends that just won’t let go. In America alone, it’s become one of the most popular forms of exercise, with studios popping up in towns across the country. Whether you’re a newcomer to the practice or a seasoned expert, there are plenty of reasons to enjoy this strengthening and relaxing form of exercise.
But don’t take our word for it! A few weeks ago, Forbes posted an article detailing yoga’s rise to fame an popularity in this country. According to the article, a study that was recently performed by Yoga Alliance and Yoga Journal surveyed about 2,000 members of the general population, as well as 1,700 yoga practitioners. The data collected revealed some interesting numbers: In 2016 alone, 80 million Americans are likely to try yoga for the first time, while 36.7 million people are already practicing yoga regularly – an increase of about 16 million people since 2012.
So why is this practice so popular? This study concluded that about 61 percent of practitioners started yoga because of the flexibility of the exercise, while another 56 percent said they were looking for a stress relief outlet, and another 49 percent said they were looking for a way to increase their general fitness. The same number – 49 percent – said that overall health was their reason, while 44 percent more said they tried yoga for improving their physical fitness.
Undoubtedly, mainstream media has contributed greatly to the popularization of the practice. With more and more celebrities practicing yoga every day, and more readily available ways to practice, yoga’s popularity is likely to only increase in the coming years!
